Sandalwood is a vegetable pigment used to dye wood. It gives shades of red, orange, cinnamon to Bordeaux and dissolves in denatured alcohol.
To obtain a redder colour, the wood must be mordanted with an alum salt preparation before applying the sandalwood mixture.
Soak 200 g Sandalwood in 946 ml denatured alcohol for 12 hours. Filter the mixture and apply with a brush in the wood grain direction. This solution will give you a red Bordeaux. For a less sustained colour, decrease the amount of Sandalwood.
