Cochineal is used to create red dyes (including bright red carmine) on the wood. Dried Cochineal is soluble in denatured alcohol.
Alum salt is used as a mordant to fix the color.
It is used in the textile industry, cabinetmaking and even serves as food coloring.
The cochineal comes from parasitic insect scales of cacti originating from Mexico and the Canary Islands.
