Understanding the right technic for the maintenance of oiled wood!

Housekeeping is not always our cup of tea!  After spending time, money and energy redecorating, it is quite normal to want to get the right cleaning products so that your new space will stay beautiful for longer.  An oiled floor requires special care.  We have all the products you need from the small maintenance task to the heavy-duty industrial clean.  Here, we will help you understand how to maintain oiled wood using the OILED WOOD MAINTENANCE CYCLE.

Before beginning:  A little theory!

Wood is a living material, even though the tree has been cut back and forth for years.  Hardwood floors contract or expand with humidity and ambient temperature; it’s a natural fluctuation.  We must therefore find a product that remains flexible but stays resistant!

The difference between an Oil and a Varnish

  • A varnish is a film-forming product:  Which means that to protect the wood, the product dries on the surface, creating a film of a hardness that varies depending on the varnish chosen.  Several synthetic components are added to it to increase its flexibility and grip.  When it is worn, it must be replaced.  A complete sanding of the surface is necessary to give 3 new coats of varnish.
  • An oil is a penetrating product: Which means that it nourishes the wood by protecting it from the inside.  It penetrates the pores of the wood and this is what allows it to follow the climatic variations that the material undergoes during the year without peeling or cracking.  LIGNA® oils are applied easily in a single coat or two depending on the oil chosen.  When your surface is worn, you simply need to clean it with the right product before applying a new coat of oil on top of the old one.

The wood acts like a sponge.  It absorbs oil, which nourishes it by preventing it from cracking and tarnishing.  In addition, the oil saturates the pores of the wood and protects it as well as seals it against moisture and stains.  Over time, wood continues to absorb oil, which decreases the waterproof resistance.  Using oil finishes is like an ancestral art and, like any great painter, we have our optimal recipes to preserve it and help extend its lifespan.

A MAINTENANCE CYCLE lasts 1 to 2 years depending on the use of your surface.  At LIGNA® we want to simplify all the life stages of your wooden surface and for this, we have developed 4 different maintenance products.  They will be used at key times, allowing you to extend the life of your oil.

  1. Clean – with SOLIA
  2. Protect – with SOLIA+
  3. Prepare – with EXTREMO
  4. Refresh – with GENERIO

To slow down the natural absorption of oil in wood, SOLIA and SOLIA+ come to the rescue.  Establish an alternating monthly routine during the first years of life of your oiled surface.  SOLIA will clean up your small messes and SOLIA+ will add a thin protective film on the surface.  Read the rest of the article in:

After you have established your routine with the products in STEP 1 and 2, you should evaluate the look of your surface.  If it’s still beautiful with an even colour, continue with your routine for another year.

When your floor becomes dull, the colour no longer seems even and stains become encrusted, that is the time to move on to STEPS 3 and 4.  EXTREMO is a powerful cleaner that will remove stains and GENERIO will revive the look of your wood surface.  Read the complete article here:

Patio with Hybri-Deck

Keep your outdoor woods looking Natural in a snap with our new LIGNA Hybrid Oil!

Mother Nature is not always lenient when it comes to our changing temperatures. When it’s finally time to take a stroll outside, we want to enjoy our yard and especially our BBQ’s which are usually installed on our wooden decks. Wood is a living material and we need a product as resistant as it is flexible to adapt the variations due to support and temperatures.

In addition to being effective in protecting both vertical and horizontal surfaces, HYBRI-DECK has an additional UV protector to maintain the natural color of the wood.

If you want more information about this product; its qualities and its hybrid technology, please visit our page!

Before starting your project, you must evaluate your surface. If it is grayed out, clean it with the EVO LUMBER BRIGHT WOOD CLEANER.

Wait 24 hours of good weather for the wood to dry completely.

To apply an impregnating product to a wood surface, it must be sanded, regardless of whether it is planed lumber leaving the store or covered with an old finish.

For sanding a softwood, we recommend using an 80-grit sandpaper and for hardwood, a 60-grit sandpaper. You can sand by hand or with an electric sander following the grain of the wood. Make sure to remove all traces of old finish if this is the case.

Once sanding is completed, remove dust from the surface with a vacuum cleaner or compressed air.

For non-planed raw wood, there is no need for sanding.

Tools for Hybri-Deck application

The ambient temperature, as well as that of your surface, must be higher than 15°C, otherwise, the product may not penetrate as well. At all times, the product must be kept above 10°C. If your container was at a lower temperature for a long time, we recommend that you test it on another surface before starting your project. If in doubt, dispose of your expired product at an Eco-Center near you.

Hybri-Deck application

First, you must mix the product well using a stick even if you have chosen the natural colour. The wood on your surface should be dry but should not be hot. It is best to work in the morning, evening or on a cloudy day.

The product is applied by a roller or brush and does not need to be wiped. Being a product that dries quickly, there is a risk of overlap. We advise you to work plank by plank to obtain a uniform finish without different shades of colour.

Application of Hybri-Deck with a brush

Only TWO COATS are required for optimum UV and water repellent protection. The second coat should be applied after only 20 minutes. Do not exceed 30 minutes, otherwise, you will have to sand with a 120-grit sandpaper so that the second coat adheres to the first one.

You can circulate carefully and replace your furniture on the surface after only 12 hours but wait 3 days before regular use.

Hybri-Deck application on a patio

Being a hybrid oil without petroleum solvent, HYBRI-DECK is cleaned with water as easily as all water-based products.

Please do not throw your leftover product in the sewer. You will rather let your leftover dry out and throw it in a garbage and bring your container at an Eco-Center near you.

A periodic cleaning with soap for exterior oiled wood is enough.

To maintain a water and UV resistant protection, a thin coat of oil will be needed after only 3 to 6 years for a vertical surface and after 1 to 3 years for a horizontal surface. The natural version, used alone, will require more attention. To renew the UV protection, a new application is necessary between 6 months and 1 year.

When refreshing, there is no need to strip or scrape. Simply clean the surface well and sand lightly with a 120-grit sandpaper before applying.   If you do not wish to darken the colour too much, you can add a 50% to 80% volume of HYBRI-DECK Natural to your colour.

Patio, two layers of Hybri-Deck

You will have a matte finish that does not mask your wood. Invite your neighbours over for a coffee out on your patio, they will be jealous.

How to Refresh your Floor with TANDEM-2 Oil without the use of a machine?

For English subtitles, please change your options ⤴

Refreshing a floor with TANDEM-2 can be done without the use of a machine on a healthy floor.  If yours are discolored by wear, we advise you to start a new application.

One of the many advantages of oil is that while refreshing, no sanding is necessary and there is no need to remove the previous product. A simple cleaning beforehand is necessary.

An oiled residential floor, if used normally and is well maintained, will need a refreshment coat only after 3 to 7 years.

Here is your ‘how to’ procedure!

Before starting your project, you must deep clean your surface area. You will want the new coat of oil to fuse with the previous one. The LIGNA line offers an intensive cleaner EXTREMO which is especially made to remove grease before applying a maintenance oil.

TANDEM-2 with tools

You will need:

At all times, your product must maintain a temperature higher than 10°C.  If your container stayed a long time below this temperature, we strongly suggest you do tests on a separate sample before moving along with your project. If in doubt, dispose of your expired product at an Eco-Center near you.

Your product must be very well mixed with a wood stick before application. You will prefer working on a dry day rather than a humid one as the oil will dry better. Only one coat of oil is necessary to refresh your wood finish.

Evaluate your surface area. The product must be wiped clean after 10 minutes, therefore, we suggest you work per area or per wood slab. Corners, or hard to reach areas, are simplified with a bleached cotton cloth or with a natural silk paintbrush. You will have more control and therefore will avoid any stain marks at the bottom of the walls.

Applicator on oiled floor

A thin coat only is necessary with a micro-fiber applicator, an applicator pad or a bleached cotton cloth. Your wood is already sealed with oil, it will not penetrate as much as on new wood and will remain sticky if it dries on the surface. If the coat you apply is too thick, it will be more difficult to wipe.

After applying the oil, wait 10 to 15 minutes before wiping in the direction of the grain of the wood. Oil that has not penetrated must be wiped off the surface.

Wiping the oiled floor with TANDEM-2

Rather simple, voilà!

Wait at least 24 hours before cautiously walking on the surface. Wait 72 hours before carefully replacing furniture and more-or-less 6 days before normal use of the surface area. * These times are indicative only, if the weather is very humid, the product will take more time to dry.

A project is never really over until your material is put away. To clean your cotton cloths, lay them flat to dry before discarding. Flaxseed oil in TANDEM-2 in contact with cotton and heat can become flammable. Once the cloth is dry, there is no risk anymore.

To clean off oil stains on your tools, use ISO-DILUANT. This soft solvent is odourless and therefore, is best for interior projects.

You most probably already know how to maintain your floors as this was a refreshment technique, nonetheless, here are basic tips. It is best to wait 10 to 15 days before cleaning with a humid mop or cloth.

For a regular cleaning, our LIGNA line offers excellent products especially designed for oiled surfaces such as SOLIA and SOLIA+ that you may use on rotation. An annual maintenance with GENERIO will delay refreshing periods of your oiled surfaces.

New in designing, epoxy river tables offer a unique visual appearance which catches the eye every time. To achieve such a special project, you need products that are just as special! Here is the duo we recommend!

To make an epoxy waterfall table, please note that you will need two different epoxies. First, the casting epoxy, which will be used to build the river itself. Then, apply a finishing epoxy which protects and gives the final touch.

Epoxy table

The Casting Epoxy, RESINOPOXY to create your River Look.

Why use a casting epoxy? Because it builds in thickness and dries quickly. Also, it does not cause air bubble situations that would compromise its appearance. Furthermore, with a garage floor epoxy, in order to build a considerable thickness, it would be necessary to apply multiple coat which would be costly in time and money. And this, without guaranteeing results.

The casting epoxy, RESINOPOXY, is easy to apply. Simply pour it into a mould (well sealed) and let it set for 84 hours. RESINOPOXY has a significant advantage and can build up to 1 1/4 inch per coat. It levels by itself and remains transparent. RESINOPOXY will not yellow over time: its resin has an anti-UV additive. Contrary to other epoxys with anti-UV protection, RESINOPOXY remains an affordable product.

You can give your river table the colour you want using epoxy. Solid colours with metallic effects, it’s your choice!

The Epoxy Finish for your River Table.

To top it all off, to ensure a glazed finish as well as the abrasion resistance of your table, it is important to apply a finishing epoxy.

A product to consider is the CRYSTALOPOXY. It offers a very dense finish that resists abrasions as well as stains caused by some liquid damages. At a reasonable price, it also offers anti-UV resistance that prevents from yellowing.  It is poured on the surface and applied with a spatula. Its slow setting time gives you a greater maneuver while applying. In addition, it is an epoxy with no solvent nor VOC, making it an accommodating product.

With the duo RESINOPOXY – CRYSTALOPOXY, it is possible for you to realize your project while respecting your budget and making your task much easier!

EXTERIA by LIGNA is an absorbing, vegetal based oil for wooden exterior surfaces. Its pigment’s richness, composed of natural earth and iron oxide, makes the wood’s grit stand out and protects your wood from the sun’s UV rays. It absorbs throughout the wood, nourishing and protecting it from water, fungi and rot.

EXTERIA is designed to protect your outdoor wood projects, vertical and horizontal.

What are the Benefits of EXTERIA?

One of many benefits for EXTERIA oil on a wood surface is that it is easy to refresh. Since its finish does not peel off, there is no need to deep sand, scrape or strip in order to apply a new coat. Simply lightly sand and wash clean before applying a refreshing coat.

When to Refresh your Outdoor Oil?

For horizontal surfaces, refresh every 1 to 3 years. For vertical surfaces, every 3 to 6 years. These indications may vary according to the use of your surface, its exposure to UV rays and bad weather conditions.

What are the best Weather Conditions for Applying an Outdoor Oil?

Your wood surface must be clean and dry. We recommend a minimum of 24 consecutive hours without rain before beginning your project and 24 hours of good weather after application.

Like most of outdoor finishing products, you must not apply under direct sunlight. Furthermore, the temperature must be above 15°C during the day or night.

When is the best Time to Apply an Outdoor Product?

You can do the outdoor application during the whole summer if the weather conditions mentioned above are respected. If you apply in the morning, be careful of morning dew. If you apply during the day, make sure your surface is in a shaded area.

Tip : A good time in the day would be early evening.  You will not have the overwhelming heat of the day.

According to our experts, the mild weather and the low risk of rain in autumn make September the perfect month for exterior finishing projects.  Also, the month of June, when it is mild is also an excellent choice.

What you Need to Refresh your Surface:

a) You will need to start your refreshing project by cleaning your surface with EXTROLIA Outdoor Wood Cleaner. Make sure there is no rubbish and no unknown substances on your surface.

b) Mix the colored and natural oil separately.

c) Calculate the quantities of products you will need for your project and mix 25 to 50% of EXTERIA colored with EXTERIA Natural. You may apply 100% colored oil, but it will darken your color. The natural application alone will renew the protection against water, but not against UV rays.

To keep a beautiful uniform color, we recommend that you first make small localized repairs before the application of the refreshment coat.

a) Empty a small portion of the oil into a plastic paint tray to keep the contents of your container clean for future use.

b) Brush cut the smaller areas before application.

c) Apply using a Micro-Fibre Applicator in the direction of the grain of the wood. You may need more than one refill depending on the size of your surface.

d) EXTERIA should be well spread to avoid over-accumulation of product that could become sticky when drying. The oil is designed to penetrate the wood and a thin coat is enough.

e) You will have to work by zones since you must not allow the product to dry before wiping. Do not worry, EXTERIA does not create overlapping marks.

a) After 5 to 15 minutes maximum, With a clean white bleached cotton cloth, wipe in the direction of the grain of the wood to help the oil absorption and to remove the surplus.

b) For a more pleasant wiping, we suggest you use knee protectors as well as shoe covers to protect the fresh oil. You can improvise protections with Bleached Coton Linens. You can also make a makeshift tool with an applicator covered with bleached cotton linens to facilitate this step.

Do not wait more than 15 minutes as the oil may become thicker and will be more difficult to wipe.

a) Clean your tools with ISO-DILUANT by LIGNA.

Note:  Flaxseed oil in EXTERIA can react to prolonged contact with cotton. When finished, carefully place the cloths in a bag filled with water or dry them flat before throwing them away.

If you have clean oil in your container, you can pour it into a smaller metal or glass container. The oil will tend to create a film (skin) on the surface over time. To avoid this, place a plastic wrap directly in contact with the oil.

Make sure to print and retain the Technical Data Sheet and note the colour.

For your safety, always identify your containers and store them in a dry and secure place, away from children’s reach.

Remember to dispose of your containers at an Eco-Center in your area.

a) We advise periodic maintenance with an outdoor wood cleaner such as EXTROLIA.

Note : For best maintenance quality, we recommend applying with a rag, a very thin coat of natural EXTERIA.  This will help protect the colour as well as fortify the water repellent protection.  This simple optional procedure will delay the need to refresh or repair your surface.

b) When the surface becomes dull and starts to fade, it’s time to apply a refreshment coat. Wait 72 hours before replacing your chairs and Bar BQ.

The Marketing team had fun testing two products to maintain and protect your Teak and exotic wood furniture:

  1. EVO Lumber Bright
  2. Blanchon Teak Oil

Simple and effective, this little video explains how to restore its original beauty to this small garden table.

For English subtitles, please change your options ⤴

Step one: Clean the surface

It is sometimes difficult to know if the beautiful table you recently bought is well protected. It is even more so when we procure used garden furniture. Our advice is to use the EVO Cleaner to remove most graying due to mold and moss. This product is fully biodegradable and has a very low level of toxicity.

EVO Lumber Bright

  • First: Protect surrounding vegetation by watering before and after treatment.
  • Product preparation: Dilute in a plastic or glass container 1 part of the product with 4 parts of hot water.
  • Apply: With a garden sprayer, cotton cloth or brush.
  • After 5 to 10 minutes: Rinse with a pressurized water jet spray or use a plastic scrub brush. Then rinse with clear water.
  • Allow to dry: Wait at least 2 days of sunshine before applying a new coating.
  • Precautions: Wear safety glasses and gloves when applying.

Second step: Finishing

For this exotic wood table, we chose to used Blanchon Teak Wood Oil.

For smaller projects like this table, you can store in a dry place to protect them from the rain. So you will not have to wait a week of sunny weather.

Teak Wood Oil Blanchon

  • First: To ensure optimal impregnation of the product, ensure that the wood is dry (2 days minimum of warm weather before application) and that there is no risk of rain within 72 hours after the 2nd layer. Do not apply in direct sunlight or above 28 ° C.
  • Preparation: Sand the wood with sandpaper 100, to open the pores of the wood and facilitate its absorption. Wipe with a dry cloth. Shake the product well before use.
  • Application: Apply the 1st coat in the direction of the wood grain with a brush or applicator pad.
  • Allow to penetrate: 20 to 30 min.
  • Second layer: As soon as the wood loses its wet appearance.

TEAK WOOD OIL can be cleaned without stripping or sanding. Applied regularly, it nourishes the wood, protects it against climatic aggressions and will not flake. As soon as the oiled surface loses its luster, dust off and then apply a new coat.

Simple right?

Black soap is one of those products that I would not separate anymore. I could praise about it’s many uses, but that’s not what interests us on this blog. Today I will answer this question, how to clean your brushes with black soap. It may seem simple and yet a few small details can significantly reduce the life of our dear brushes.

How to clean your brushes with black soap?

It’s almost intuitive. Put pure black soap directly on your brush and massage the hair. You do not need a big amount of product, maximum one teaspoon. Rinse with warm water and already, you should see most of the paint coming out of the brush. If you have left your brush a little too long in the open air, you will probably need a brushing tool and more determination to remove the dried residues.

Massage deep under lukewarm water to remove the paint that has embedded inside. Some types of brushes are designed to hold a significant amount of products so you may need a second wash with black soap. Dont be shy to manipulate your brush until there is only clear water left.

For English subtitles, please change your options ⤴

You should repeat the procedure as long as there is paint. Dark pigmented paint may slightly color the hair over time. It will not influence your paint colors in future uses.

Warning ! Do not use whatever product.

Washing your brushes with dish soap or hand soap is not the best idea. Of course they will be clean, but in the long run you may have bad surprises. Some soaps will tend to leave a protective film and eventually it will become sticky on your brushes hairs. As a result, the grime will be harder to remove.

The brushes hairs are almost as capricious as your own hair. Using soap that is too abrasive or designed to “degrease” will dry them out. Black soap is eco-friendly and effective, so why not?

How to store your brushes?

We all have this tendency to put our brushes upside down to let them dry. We love to have quick access to our tools when we work. The problem of this method results from the fact that the water contained in the hairs will tend to go down. Thus, the glue at the base of the hairs will be damaged. The best is to hang them upside down when drying, than the hairs will keep their shape and not bend.

Black soap will help nourish the natural bristles of your brushes, thanks to its olive oil composition. After cleaning, I put a small drop of black soap on the outer hairs to help restore their original shape and keep their flexibility.

The best is to leave them upside down at any time, but hey, once dry you can make a beautiful bouquet according to your pleasure. 🙂
